One of the key elements of being a sniper is concealment. In a nutshell, the goal is to break up shape and color to remove any recognizable outline to the observer. Recognizable shapes are the human body, facial features and a rifle.
To break up the shape of the human body, snipers use ghillie suits. Combining the ghillie suit with natural vegetation is a very effective way of breaking shape and color and blending to the environment.
This, to some extent, works just as well for the rifle. But there is one part in particular that is always looking somewhat the same from the observed point of view – the front of the rifle.
Being very distinguishable, the front of a sniper rifle consists of two main shapes; a large circle on top of a smaller circle – the rifle scope and the muzzle.
Throughout history, snipers became more and more creative in removing the shape to prevent recognition. Usually this involved the use of common materials like PVC piping, tie wraps, tape, elastic bands etc. This method, however partially effective, has its drawbacks;
Another factor that a sniper has to take in account is of course the weather. Not only does it physically influence the bullet trajectory, it also has a negative influence on target projection through the scope, image quality and overall visibility (both from the observing and observed point of view).
This problem has been addressed by the industry with the introduction of kill flashes, sunscreens, scope extenders etc.
CRIOS Innovations and YORK Development started a collaboration to combine these two aspects together, developing an adjustable sun screen which also doubles as a method to break the obvious round hole of the rifle scope. The development had to abide by the following principles;
The result is the Tactical Scope Cover or TSC© for short. The TSC can be mounted to the front of the rifle scope and acts like a sun screen, which can be adjusted to the angle of the sun, a rain cover and has QD interchangeable front covers with an organic cutout to remove the obvious round shape of the front of the scope.
